McAllen to Take Aid to Sister City Monterrey, Mexico
The aftermath of Hurricane Alex left behind a devastated Monterrey, Mexico. The hurricane caused flooding beyond imagine and power outages to thousands of people. Photos taken of the area depict a Monterrey that is unrecognizable. Streets, bridges and highways seem to have disappeared. Some people have lost their homes by the tremendous flow of water that ripped through the streets.
In an effort to aid Monterrey in their time of need, the City of McAllen, McAllen Chamber of Commerce and the McAllen Economic Development Corporation will coordinate efforts to send cases of water for the people of Monterrey. “Our hope is to provide the citizens of Monterrey some relief from this catastrophic event,” said Steve Ahlenius President/CEO of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce. “We also hope that Monterrey will soon recover from this devastation and want the people of Monterrey to know that we have not forgotten the friendship and relationship we have built with our sister city for many years,” he added. The Chamber contacted the City of Monterrey and at the top of their list of needs is water.
The City, the Chamber and MEDC are asking the community and businesses to participate by donating bottled water cases and delivering them to the McAllen Chamber of Commerce located at 1200 Ash Ave. Water donations will be received at the Chamber parking lot on Thursday through Saturday, July 8-10 and on Monday, July 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
