Highways
Valley highways are safe, scenic, plentiful, and convenient. US Highway 83, connecting the Valley to West Texas, is an obvious choice for those who wish to see a large chunk of the Texas Border. One of the interesting features of EXP 83 is that during your trek through the Valley you are never much more than 10 miles from the border. Business 83 or "Old 83" runs parallel to EXP 83 winding through the downtown areas of all of the cities; as a matter of fact, Old 83 is often called the "Main Street of the Valley."
US Highway 281 from San Antonio has become more popular since it was made four lanes. US 281 extends north past Edinburg and has a new interchange in Pharr that connects it to EXP 83. Business 281 runs south through Pharr and "Ts" off east and west where it is known as Military Highway.
US Highway 77 connects the Valley to the coastal bend region. Emerging from Texas ranch country, Raymondville welcomes travelers on US 77 to the Valley in Willacy County where it runs down to Harlingen and hooks up with EXP 83, from there 77/83 runs southeast to Brownsville.
TX Highway 100 just south of Harlingen goes east from 77/83 and takes you through Los Fresnos and Port Isabel to South Padre Island.
